Mural at El Jardin de Arte Folklórico Latino
This mural was completed in 2019 as part of the “Latinx Folk Art Garden,” a community garden along the Rio Grande ARTway (at the intersection with 8th St.). Senior art student Tansy Zacharias and her mentor, Valerie Rose created this piece to represent Latin cultures and asked the community to help them paint the final product. (Touch ups done years later by Gabriela Mejia).
The project is designed by the coming together of the Latinx + Anglo communities. The purpose of this project is to call attention to the importance of Latinx culture in our valley. It also helps integrate our diverse communities. This valley is between 30 + 42% Latinx. Our Stakeholder Group has remained engaged with the project over the two years, from design and implementation to garden maintenance and clean-up.
