Carbondale Arts presents “Women (Im)Print” a group exhibition by 2 women artists Katie Browne and Bailey Haines at the Carbondale Arts Gallery on display September 27 through November 1, 2024. The opening reception took place on First Friday, October 4, from 5-7pm at The Launchpad, with an artist talk at 5:30pm.

“Community Service Print Projects”, a group show with The Project Shop (and made possible by Arts in Society Grant), features works by student-artists learning practical design development, printmaking and production skills. Their group show runs concurrently (September 27 - November 1) in the second gallery space.

“Women (Im)Print” showcases hand-printed works by two women who are friends and collaborators: Katie Browne (curator) and Bailey Haines. The title is a play on words: printmaking is the mode in which we creatively express ourselves, while the imprints that the people and places in our lives leave on us and that we leave on them provide the basis of our inspiration. Printmaking is a diverse field and we each specialize in different techniques. However, our works collectively feature bright colors, bold shapes, and are inspired by nature and community and how we relate to it all.

Katie Browne (curator)
Carbondale, Colorado

Katie Browne is a textile artist and printmaker. She learned to block print in high school and continued to study printmaking while at Ft Lewis College in Durango. More than a decade later, while living in Hawai’i, she enrolled in the Fashion Technology program at UH Maui College. During that time she was introduced to silk screen printing, and so began her fascination with hand-printing on textiles.

Katie lives in her hometown of Carbondale, CO where she likes to hike, ski, garden, read, and sew little jackets for her adopted senior Chihuahua.

Bailey Haines
Carbondale, Colorado

Bailey Haines lives and works in Colorado, an intersection of traditional values, progressive ideas, stark landscapes, and deeply-rooted communities. She is inspired by the richness of life and landscape on the western slope.

After ten fulfilling years as a graphic designer for a landscape architecture firm, Bailey yearned to move away from the computer, and to make art the old fashioned way, with my hands. She wanted to lean into the slow, thoughtful pace and uncompromising results of working with physical materials.

At Anderson Ranch (in Snowmass Village, Colorado), Bailey studied with Jean Gumpper, a master of the reduction woodcut. Bailey fell in love with that process, and has practiced with her methods for several years. More recently Bailey began to experiment with mixed media (layered botanical prints and gouache) and to explore the brilliant simplicity of monoprints.

Learning the art of printmaking is a lifelong journey and she is grateful to be on the path.
