Where there is line, there is plane and where there is plane, there is line.
— Savanna LaBauve

Carbondale Arts presented “Linear // Planar”, a 2-person ceramics exhibition by Savanna LaBauve and Stephanie Seguin May 3 through May 31, 2019 at the R2 Gallery inside The Launchpad. This exhibition ran in tandem with “Yellow For Frances“, a solo painting show with Eden Keil.

Both Savanna and Stephanie were in their second and final year of Artist in Residency at Carbondale Clay Center. Having used the prompt Paper Clay: Two artists. Two materials. Two perspectives, each artist responded to their materials, investigative processes, and the search for the point at which forms would melt into the page and where patterns became physical form. The resulting works highlight the space between the two and three dimensional, and scrutinize where they meet, overlap, and diverge. Through vessels paired with drawings, neighbored by sculptural components layered with pattern, the show presented the viewers with a compelling look at a breadth of material possibilities. Savanna and Stephanie aspired to spark a new plane of thought by engaging their audience through a collation of research-based results.

Savanna LaBauve

Savanna grew up in Baton Rouge, LA, also known as the deep south. After finishing her BFA in Ceramics and Painting from Louisiana State University (LSU) she moved from cajun country to the mountains --- Carbondale, CO where she is Carbondale Clay Center's current artist in residence. Growing up in her parents’ retail store, Lezárd Rouge, Savanna was always surrounded by artists and their creative endeavors. That creative stimulus led her to fall in love with art at a young age. Throughout her primary and secondary schooling, she developed a love for drawing and painting. It was not until college, when she was exposed to sculpture and ceramics, that she found her passion for three-dimensional works. While at LSU, Savanna sought out unique opportunities, such as Printmaking in Florence program, the National Student Exchange Program which took her to the University of Hawaii for one year, and craft school workshops to learn from practicing artists.
